The new Sycamore Meijer store opened today Thursday, July 9th to add an additional food and soft goods store to the area. With a delayed opening due to COVID-19, this new supercenter store will provide a shopping destination to the DeKalb County area.
The new Meijer store will rival other Meijer locations with a full line of the top named grocery items, as well as a pharmacy, liquor department, bakery, deli, meat market, and an area dedicated to soft goods, which will expand during select holidays.
The City of Sycamore is looking forward to the economic boom of this new store. There is a concern about where the additional shoppers will come from. Having a Sycamore location will keep DeKalb County residence from driving to St. Charles (the next closest Meijer location). The key goal will be to encourage shoppers not only from DeKalb County but from the surrounding area as well.
The growth of Sycamore in 2019 shows the addition of 38 single-family detached homes, 14 single-family attached units (one 2-unit and three 4-unit buildings) – and 40 lost apartments due to a local fire. The tentative net growth would be approximately 200 additional shoppers to add to the current Sycamore population. In DeKalb, there was limited growth in 2019 with 4 new homes, 36 new apartments, and 46 lost apartments due to fire or closure. These numbers mean an additional 100 new shoppers (not counting the declining enrollment at Northern Illinois University).
According to an Assistant Manager (asking not to be named) at the local HyVee, stores like Meijer and HyVee need between 2,500 and 3,000 shoppers every day to be profitable (payroll, utilities, advertising, etc). HyVee is similar in concept but not the same square footage or offering the types and quantities of soft goods like Meijer.
Opening this superstore will be a boom for the economy, but could be a concern about where the shoppers will come from or to the lost revenue of other local grocery stores and similar operations. The bottom line will be the gross sales and local tax revenue for Sycamore. With the limited number of shoppers and dollars available for grocery shopping, some stores will see a decline in total revenue for the summer and fall season.
Adding a store like Meijer will be a positive experience for shoppers as all local grocery stores will become more competitive with prices to keep shoppers coming back to their stores. Watch for their Grand Opening specials.
