The second weekend in July is special to a group of young children as they go away to camp. But these camps and children are special. We would like to introduce you to Camp One Step located in Wisconsin, serves children in the Illinois and Wisconsin areas, as well as, throughout the Midwestern States.
Camp One Step empowers children who have been diagnosed with cancer to find new hope and believe again in a brighter future.
On this July weekend you will find local DeKalb County businessman Bruce Whitman preparing and cooking a great meal for Camp One Step campers and staff. Bruce has volunteered to help cook and prepare cookouts for Camp One Step for the past 10 + years. Each year he spends two days in preparing the food for the cookout and then on the day of the event volunteers to cook and grill all the foods.
Camp One Step exists to heal these scars that no one can see. Through community, support and shared experiences with peers, they deliver happy, pain free medicine called “camp.” They empower children to find new hope and believe again in a brighter future.
Bruce is the owner of ‘Whitman Event Planners’ and the former owner of ‘Whitman Catering’. He has lived in DeKalb for over 50 years. He attended DeKalb High School and worked for a variety of companies before starting his own business 30 years ago. Bruce also volunteers with the Kishwaukee Fest Parade of Parades held in DeKalb each July. He is a member of the DeKalb Moose and DeKalb ELKS lodge. When not working, Bruce takes his vintage Cadillac convertible for road trips around the Midwest and enjoys spending time with his two dogs. Bruce’s love of children and strong belief in the mission statement of Camp One Step makes him … Someone you should KNOW.
