Ryan Loitz, a Life Scout with BSA Troop 16 chartered at Federated Church in Sycamore and a Sophomore at Sycamore High School, is currently working on his Eagle project, “Recycle Your Cycle: For a Wheelie Good Cause”.
Ryan will be collecting gently-used adult and youth bicycles and bringing the bikes up to working condition. Bikes will be donated to Axletree, a non-profit organization that promotes cycling advocacy and community awareness, and together they will donate the bikes to people in need in the community this spring.
Ryan comments, “I wanted to do something to make our community a better place and help people in need, and found there is a transportation need to help people get to work and school. I’m excited to work with Axletree to be able to provide a way to help people get where they need to be. I also hope to have enough adult and youth bikes to donate to parents and their children to encourage family time by enjoying a healthy activity together.”
As the first part of this project, Ryan is organizing a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser this Wednesday, March 2nd. It will be at the Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Avenue in Sycamore, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Dinner will include pasta, meatballs and sauce, salad, rolls, dessert and drink. Cost is a free will donation. Funds collected will be used towards repair parts and labor, and to purchase helmets and bike locks to donate along with the bikes.
A community collection day for bikes is being planned for Sunday, April 24, at Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists, 3266 Resource Parkway in DeKalb. More information will be available soon.
