For the past three years, the Sanderson Family has been placing American flags on Veteran’s graves at the Mayfield Cemetery. Kurt and Kim Sanderson and their two daughters (Jordan and Annabell) live in the Mayfield Township in Sycamore. They have fixed and replaced broken American Flags and made sure every Veteran’s grave has a current flag and is noticed at the Mayfield Cemetery.
“This idea came from my husband who lost a good friend (veteran) and he felt it important to show respect to all veterans,” commented Kim (Goyke) Sanderson. “I also felt this project would be a good lesson for the girls to learn more about our military service members, a positive civic project, and also to show respect for these people who served our country.”
This has become an annual project for the Sanderson Family and they hope other families can create or find a volunteer project to support veterans. The Mayfield Cemetery is about a mile away from the Sanderson home, making it also more of a local neighborhood beautification project.
NOTE: Veteran’s Day is celebrated on November 11. There will be a special Veteran’s Ceremony in both DeKalb and Sycamore as well as other local communities at 11:00 AM.
