The Northern Illinois University School of Theatre & Dance is putting on the Spanish play titled “Life Is A Dream”, written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca and Directed by Stanton Davis, associate professor of theatre and dance.
In Life is a Dream, The King of Poland, Basilio, gets an omen that his son, Segismundo, will grow up to be a tyrant. When he hears this fortune, he locks his son up in a tower to keep his kingdom safe. He tells the world that his son died. When the troubles of succession come about, Segismundo is revealed to be alive and is allowed to be king for a day to see if he is a fitful successor.
The play has also been described as “the supreme example of Spanish Golden Age drama”. The play’s central themes are the conflict between free will and fate, as well as restoring one’s honor. It remains one of Calderón’s best-known and most studied works, and was listed as one of the 40 greatest plays of all time.
