Currently, voters in a municipality in Illinois can vote through a referendum to construct and fund a veteran’s monument; however, once they are constructed these municipalities have no specific authority to use those same funds for their upkeep.
A bill sponsored by 69th District State Representative Joe Sosnowski looks to place more tools in the hands of our local leaders in order to provide for the necessary upkeep of the memorials and monuments for those who have fought for our country. Veteran’s memorials give our communities a place to honor our veterans, and we owe it to them to do all we can to preserve these sites for future generations. Senate Bill 1824 passed both Houses and now awaits final consideration by the Governor.
