Appropriately enough, on a day when we are celebrating the DeKalb Police Department helping to safely return a missing teen, today is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day across the country. Today is a special day for citizens to L.E.A.D. the way in thanking their local police officers for all that they do.
Law enforcement officers have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day. In addition, much of what they do goes unappreciated—especially all of the routine acts of public service they provide to their communities. So today is a day to make sure that we show honor and respect to the men and women in blue throughout DeKalb County.
HOW TO OBSERVE
There are several ways to show your support. Send a note of thanks to your local, county or state police agency. Wear blue, turn your social media channels blue or shine a blue porch light to show your support. Find more ideas at Concerns of Police Survivors and share your support using #NationalLawEnforcementAppreciationDay to share on social media.
HISTORY
National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was founded in 2015 to thank officers across the country for all the daily sacrifices they make for their communities. Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), the FBI National Academy Associates, the Fraternal Order of Police, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Officer Down Memorial Page, Law Enforcement United, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, International Conference of Police Chaplains, and the National Troopers Coalition are only a few of the many organizations who supported the inaugural day of National Law Enforcement Officers Appreciation Day. Since then, many more organizations nationwide have joined forces to support National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.) to spread encouragement and respect to these dedicated men and women.
