Kishwaukee United Way’s Day of Caring committee is hard at work planning the 7th Annual Community Wide Day of Caring, scheduled for this Thursday, September 8, 2011. Kick-Off Rally will be held at 8:15 am Thursday at the American National Bank (DeKalb Avenue, Sycamore). This event promotes teamwork and gives people a taste of volunteering while making a difference in the community. Day of Caring matches teams of volunteers from businesses, schools, faith communities, and community groups with non-profit agencies in DeKalb County who are in need of hands-on help.
“We’re very excited about Day of Caring 2011,” says Alyson Short, Chair and longstanding United Way volunteer. “In our first year we had 40 volunteers working on 7 projects, and in the last couple of years we have had five times the volunteers to help out on dozens of projects throughout the county. Volunteers have washed windows at Opportunity House Group homes, painted murals at the Adult Day Care Center, and mulched playgrounds at both the Growing Place and Children’s Learning Center. This year, we hope to attract even more volunteers to assist the various agencies needing help. We are looking forward to another successful Day of Caring.”
Day of Caring is the official kick-off for the Kishwaukee United Way 2011/2012 Campaign. “Our community has done a great job of helping our area’s not-for-profits financially,” says Lori Lozeau, last year’s Day of Caring Co-Chair and United Way Board Member. “But these agencies also need volunteer assistance in maintenance projects in addition to finances. History has shown that DeKalb County residents pull together to get things done when needed. This event is a wonderful way to allow volunteers and agencies to coordinate to showcase the United Way’s efforts.” To get further information, including volunteer or project sign up forms, contact the Kishwaukee United Way at 815.756.7522 or visit http://kishwaukeeunitedway.com
