The Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary Club recently announced the award of its inaugural community grant to two local organizations. The club established an annual grant devoted to improving the lives of children, youth and families in DeKalb County earlier this year. The grant, titled the Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary Community Grant for Children, Youth and Families, stems from a club effort to address what they feel are important needs in local
“We’ve done many community service projects in the past and will continue to do so, but we wanted to focus a major effort on the area of children, youth and families.” said Marshall Boyle, the club’s current president.
The club plans to award $10,000 in grant awards each year. This year the club received nine exceptional applications; making the selection committee’s job a difficult one. In the end, the committee selected the DeKalb County Community Gardens as the primary grant awardee. They will use the award to expand their Grow-Mobile Program, which is a pop-up food market and education center designed to access food deserts in DeKalb County.
The program targets people living with food insecurity and those who may have health issues related to poor access to healthy food options.
A second award was also made to the DeKalb County Youth Services Bureau. This award will assist in keeping their crisis intervention services available over the next year.
The Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary Club will be hosting a fundraising event on September 24 called “TruckToberfest” in the parking lot at Faranda’s in DeKalb. Food trucks, music and family fun will be on order for the day. Proceeds from the event will go towards funding this recurring grant opportunity. Community members who would like to contribute to the effort are encouraged to attend and support the event between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm that day. Additionally, community members who want to get involved in this project or projects like it, are encouraged to visit a Rotary club in the DeKalb/Sycamore area.
