Kish College information meeting for Short-Term Training Courses on January 9

The Kishwaukee College Continuing Education department is holding a free Information Session on Short-Term Training Programs on Tuesday, January 9 from 6 – 8:00p.m. in Room B2301 at the College.

Short-Term Training refers to non-credit programs that prepare students for a variety of entry-level positions. The programs range from fourteen to twenty weeks of training and prepare students for certification testing or other forms of professional testing to prepare the student to work in the field. It is a path that results in being prepared for a good, skilled position and can often act as a gateway to further career development. Most Short-Term Training programs are also eligible for financial benefits from the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

The programs being covered at the Information Session on January 9 are Phlebotomy Technician, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinary Assistant.

Phlebotomy Technicians are healthcare professionals who obtain and prepare specimens for laboratory processing. Traditionally, Phlebotomist Technicians are associated with drawing and preparing blood in hospitals, clinics, or physician’s offices. However, Phlebotomists can be employed in a wide variety of fields that work with any bodily fluids that can be laboratory tested.

Pharmacy Technicians are health care professionals who have been trained to assist pharmacists to dispense prescription medication. Depending on the position, the technician may also manage third-party billing, answer telephones, direct customers to items or to the pharmacist for medication consultation, receive written prescriptions, clean and sterilize dispensing bottles and instruments, answer questions regarding non-drug products, and operate a cash register.

Veterinarian Assistants work with Veterinarians and Veterinarian Technicians to provide medical care to animals. Duties for Vet Assistants range from feeding and watering animals to sterilizing lab and surgical equipment and preparation of samples for lab examination and more.
