Alyssa Fritz has been elected to the office of Post-Secondary Vice President for Skills USA in Illinois. Fritz, Sycamore, is a student in the Criminal Justice program at Kishwaukee College.
Kishwaukee College student Alyssa Fritz has been elected as Post-Secondary Vice President for Skills USA in Illinois. Fritz, Sycamore, is in the Criminal Justice program at Kishwaukee and plans to pursue a career in Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
Fritz is no stranger to SkillsUSA. As a high school student taking classes at the Kishwaukee Education Consortium (KEC), she was President of the KEC SkillsUSA chapter and then served at the state-level as the State Historian. Her brother, Michael, is also in SkillsUSA in Fire Science. As Post-Secondary Vice President, her duties will include planning meeting agenda, stepping in when the President is unable to attend a meeting, and overseeing a team of 13 SkillsUSA officers from across Illinois.
SkillsUSA is a national, state, regional, and local organization for technical, skilled, health and personal service occupations students in high school and college. SkillsUSA has over 300,000 members in over 14,000 chapters in 55 state and territorial associations including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. In Illinois, there are seven regions with 88 high school and college chapters representing 225 training sections.
Fritz has high praise for the SkillsUSA organization. “It gives you great opportunities to challenge yourself. I know that it allowed me to step outside my comfort zone by offering leadership roles. I am not comfortable talking in front of crowds, but learned to do it in Skills,” she said.
She highly recommends high school students enroll in KEC and also take advantage of dual credit courses offered by Kishwaukee College. “I took English 103 and 104 with Mr. Doty in (Sycamore) high school and learned a lot. It was challenging and great preparation for college and I earned credit in both KEC and the dual credit program,” she said. “I entered Kish with 18 credit hours and that will allow me to finish my course work earlier as well as saving me money in tuition.”
She plans to transfer to Western Illinois University to complete her career goals.
