The Kishwaukee College Early Childhood Center (ECC) is excited to announce that it has received a Quality Improvement Grant in the amount of $1,140 to purchase a new outdoor sensory play table. Funding was made possible through the Illinois Department of Human Services in a grant program administered locally by Community Coordinated Child Care (4-C). The purpose of the grant program was to help early learning facilities to make improvements to their learning environment to support children’s growth and learning.
The sensory play table is the latest addition to the ECC’s outdoor classroom. “One of our Center’s goals has been to create a true outdoor classroom where children can engage in a wide variety of fun learning activities parallel to those enjoyed during indoor learning time,” said Steve Kimmel, ECC Director. “When children participate in sensory play, they develop their large and small muscle skills as they lift and pour materials; strengthen cognitive skills as they estimate which containers will hold the most water or sand; enhance their language development with concepts such as more/less, same different, greater than/less than; and build their social skills as they work cooperatively together.”
Other outdoor classroom equipment featured for children’s enjoyment and learning at the ECC include: stationary musical instruments, a play house, a sandbox with magnetic wall, a tree house climber, picnic tables and benches, a block play stage with outdoor blocks, and an array of bikes and wagons.
The Early Childhood Center is now enrolling two- through five-year- olds for the upcoming fall semester which begins on August 29. Enrollment is open to all community members and Kishwaukee College students and employees.
Families are invited to visit the ECC and check out its outdoor classroom during Open Houses on August 2 from 5 –7:00p.m. and August 11 from 10:30 – 11:30a.m. Complete information and an online application are available at www.kishwaukeecollege.edu/ecc or interested families may contact Steve Kimmel, Director of the Early Childhood Center, at 815-825- 9880 or at steve.kimmel@kishwaukeecollege.edu.
