Kishwaukee College is offering a Phlebotomy Technician Program specifically designed for healthcare professionals who have already earned their Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) credential through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The Phlebotomy Tech class will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, March 20 through June 28 from 9:30a.m. – noon at Kishwaukee College. There is a mandatory Orientation Session on March 9 at 9:30a.m. in Room B2301 at Kishwaukee College.
The program was developed to allow CNAs to add the Phlebotomy Tech certification to their skill set to enhance employment opportunities. The class is restricted to CNAs who received their training under WIOA to make the dual specialization financially accessible. Under WIOA regulations, eligible participants can only receive funding for one short-term training program. First National Bank in DeKalb has provided grant funding to allow area WIOA trained CNAs to enroll in the Phlebotomy Tech program free of charge.
Phlebotomists are skilled health care professionals who have been trained to collect, transport, handle and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis using venipuncture and micro collection techniques. Phlebotomists are in high demand. Many of the past graduates have been hired immediately after they completed the class. This class will prepare participants to take the PBT – ASCP certification exam through a combination of classroom instruction and externship application of Phlebotomy topics and skills.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 27% through 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform blood work. Added to a CNA credential, students who complete the Phlebotomy Tech program may significantly increase their employment opportunities and earning potential.
