Kishwaukee College is partnering with the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership to offer a class in Spanish for Professionals. The class meets for three consecutive sessions on Thursdays, May 11, May 18 and May 25, from 3 – 4:30p.m. at the Community Outreach Building, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. This training is for nonprofit organizations in DeKalb County and is offered free of charge through the generous support of First Midwest Bank.
The training is focused on building Spanish-speaking skills in the workplace. Each session builds on the previous session and participants should plan on attending all three. Session 1 is Anticipating Language – Developing a Script; Session2 is Hispanic Cultures – Expectations of Services/Vocabulary Building; and Session 3 is Negotiated Language – Lowering Affective Filters.
The instructor for Spanish for Professionals is Dr. David Paulson. Dr. Paulson holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Applied Linguistics and Teacher Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has lectured in Spain, France, Chile, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Colombia and Puerto Rico. Paulson has been on the faculty of the University of Barcelona, the University of Illinois, Northern Illinois University, North Dakota University, Minnesota State University, and Concordia College. He currently resides in DeKalb, teaching ESL, G.E.D. Prep in Spanish, Spanish for Business, and undergraduate Spanish.
