Stage Coach Players cordially requests your attendance at its second summer production this year, It Shoulda Been You. The musical-comedy directed by Jan Kuntz with musical director Judy O’Connor is about a wedding which comically brings together two very different families. It Shoulda Been You is an award-winning musical with music by Barbara Anselmi and book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove that had its premiere at the George Street Playhouse in 2011.
The often charming and funny original musical It Shoulda Been You invites audiences to a wedding day not to be forgotten: an event where anything that can go wrong does and love is apt to pop up in unexpected places. The bride, Rebecca Steinberg, is Jewish. Her groom to be, Brian Howard, is Catholic. Her mother is a force of nature while his mom is a tempest in a cocktail shaker. When the bride’s ex-boyfriend crashes the party, the perfect wedding day begins to come apart at the seams leaving the sister of the bride to patch the day up before it all goes south.
Filled with crazy twists, this laugh-riot ensemble cast and fast-paced show features standout songs, “Perfect,” “Back In The Day,” and “Love You Till The Day.” To get an idea of the music, the original broadway cast recording can be heard via Spotify, or a sampling of the songs is available at the Music Theatre International website.
The original production of It Shoulda Been You was directed by David Hyde Pierce (Spamalot, Curtains) and starred Tyne Daly (Gypsy) as the bride’s mother, Judy. The production and its cast were nominated for Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Awards in 2015, and the musical won the Broadway World UK award for favorite musical in 2017.
