The Sycamore History Museum is proud to announce its evolution into the DeKalb County History Center (DCHC). Partnering with the Joiner History Room, March 1st marked the beginning of this new organization dedicated to “Inspiring curiosity in DeKalb County history.” Plans include a new building and greater opportunities to engage with local history organizations.
In the future, when a new facility is developed, the DeKalb County History Center will house the Joiner History Room. It will blend a museum, archives, and resource center that will bring people together through exhibits, programs, and research. DCHC will encourage exploration of the diverse stories that are unique to the county’s history, aiming to enlighten the decisions of tomorrow. Collaboration is a key aspect of the new History Center. DCHC will help build the capacity of other local historical organizations by providing professional development resources and opportunities for partnerships.
Also launched March 1st was a new website, dekalbcountyhistory.org. Visitors will find
updates on the plans for a new facility. The building will have exhibit space, research room,
dedicated programming area, and collection storage (for archives and three-dimensional
artifacts) designed to museum standards. Currently, information is being gathered from other history groups, which will be added to phase two of the website. Details about upcoming events, locations, hours, collection highlights, along with a list of the 20 plus DeKalb county history organizations will all be found in one location, dekalbcountyhistory.org.
The DeKalb County History Center will be located at the current site of the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main Street. Until a new building is completed, the exhibit, collection and archives will operate in the space previously occupied by the Sycamore History Museum, and the Joiner History Room will still collect county archival materials.
The DeKalb County History Center will be a community anchor that serves as a gathering place that inspires curiosity and builds pride in our county. DCHC is eager to share its mission and help inspire future generations through exploring DeKalb county’s stories.
