“Into the Woods”, a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, won several Tony awards, including best score, best book and best actress in a musical (Joanna Gleason).
Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s 1976 book, “The Uses of Enchantment,” the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story, involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm. It also includes references to several other well-known tales.
G-K Community Showcase is a nonprofit organization of volunteers interested in bringing performing arts to the Genoa-Kingston area. The group was started by members of the GKHS Drama Department and a handful of community members interested in promoting the arts. Through the years, as Showcase has gained exposure and because of a cooperative effort with other area theater groups such as Children’s Community Theatre and Stagecoach Players, both of DeKalb, and Indian Valley Theater in Sandwich, Showcase has grown to include members from neighboring communities and offers opportunities for a wide variety of performers. Last year, several past members of Showcase branched off to create Genoa Children’s Theater, a theater group geared toward ages 9-18.
