On January 1, 2016 there was 237 new laws that took effect in Illinois. Unfortunately, a balanced budget is not among them.
Several of the new laws affect children, veterans and the elderly. Others affect drivers and consumers. Below is a quick look at some of the more notable laws taking effect on Friday, January 1st.

PA 99-0430/HB2462: Allows families to legally install monitoring cameras in the nursing home rooms occupied by their loved ones.
PA 99-0352/SB1304: Establishes new rules and regulations for police officers who wear body cameras, and also increases the fines for moving violations by up to 12.5%.
PA99-0050/SB009 & PA99-0051/SB067: Prohibits the sale of powdered caffeine to anyone younger than 18 years of age, and prohibits the sale of products consisting of or containing powdered alcohol.
PA 99-0212/HB1453: Allows defendants charged with speeding 26 mph or more above the speed limit to be eligible for court supervision if they have not been previously convicted of a similar offense.
PA 99-0372/HB2932: Adds military personnel killed during on duty training activities to the list of instances when flags will fly at half-staff.

Balance the budget!
Our elected officials are smart enough to be able to decide what we can buy, use, or sell and to whom but they can’t balance a budget or even think about removing old laws that are no longer applicable. How about control spending instead of trying to increase revenue. How about removing antiquated laws and at least providing sunset provisions to new laws that will automatically remove them if not readdressed after say 5 years!
