The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors announced Monday that Northern Illinois University has been awarded the bid to host its eight Football State Championship games at Huskie Stadium in odd years beginning in 2013 and extending through 2021.
Northern Illinois University Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher and Convocation Center Director John Gordon led a joint campus-community steering committee that put the winning bid together.
Debbie Armstrong, DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau Director and a member of the committee, said an estimated 32,000 visitors are expected to make their way to DeKalb County to attend the IHSA State Football Championships November 29-30, 2013. “This was a great team effort. It’s a win for the entire county,” said Armstrong.
The event is estimated to bring an economic impact of between $800,000 and $1 million dollars.
“We are honored and excited to be selected to host this prestigious sporting event. It will create a significant economic impact for the City of DeKalb, the NIU community, DeKalb County, and the entire Northern Illinois region. We look forward to welcoming the IHSA officials, teams, and their fans,” stated Doug Nelson, Chair of the DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau will play a key role in booking hotel rooms, hospitality services, and directing visitors to restaurants, shopping, and attractions prior to and during the two-day sporting event.
