Personal Stories of Heroes and Heroines Highlight Presentation

SYCAMORE, ILLINOIS.  Larry Spivack, President of the Illinois Labor History Society, and Regional Director for AFSCME Council, will speak on March 29, 2012, 7:00 p.m., at the Sycamore Public Library.

Using a multi-media presentation, Mr. Spivack will share exciting stories of heroes and heroines whose actions have had a significant and continuing impact on the quality of life for Illinois’ citizens and workers everywhere.

Following Larry Spivack’s discussion, AFSCME DeKalb Sub-Chapter 70 President Earl Shumaker will present books on labor history to Sarah Tobias, Director of the Sycamore Public Library, and to Dee Coover, Director of the DeKalb Public Library.  Donated books will include Steven Ashby’s “Staley:  the Fight for a New American Labor Movement”, James Green’s “Death in the Haymarket”, Philip Dray’s “There is Power in a Union,” and Elliott Gorn’s “Mother Jones: The Most Dangerous Woman in America”.   Light refreshments will be served.

The public is cordially invited to attend.

The Illinois Labor History Society (ILHS) is the deed holder of the Haymarket Martyrs Monument in Forest Park, a National Historic Landmark site. The ILHS has also helped to obtain National Landmark status for Chicago’s Stockyard Gate and the gravesite of Mother Jones in Mt. Olive, Illinois. The Illinois Labor History Society is currently helping the Pullman neighborhood in Chicago to gain National Park status.
