The Better Business Bureau Advises “Check Before You Click” in New Google Doc Sharing Scam.
The BBB is asking people to report any instances of a latest phishing scam to the BBB Scamtracker and alert friends and family. The scam starts by people receiving an email that says the sender is sharing a Google Doc with them and to access it, you must click on a link.
The site then looks like Google, but it prompts the user to enter their actual Google username and password. Inputting your email and password into the fake form can give scammers access to your Google Drive, Gmail and any personal information stored within.
BBB Chicago and Northern Illinois president and CEO Steve Bernas says “This is another in a series of waves of phishing attempts by scammers to steal valuable information from businesses and consumers. We find this especially troubling because people are seeing requests to share a document by names from their contact lists.” Bernas adds, “Always contact a person asking to share a Google document with you to make sure it is a legitimate sharing effort.”
BBB Tips:
- Please report any cyber scam attempts and scams to the BBB Scamtracker
- If you feel your account may have been compromised…. Be sure to change your password. Pick one that will be very difficult to guess and contains upper case letters, numbers and symbols
