This Sunday, November 3rd, 2013, plan to come to the Glidden Homestead’s Patent Day Celebration. The Barn will be open, Blacksmith Shop will be operating, and tours will be offered. Admission is $4, for those over the age of 14. Also on Sunday, at either 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. plan to go on one of the Barbed Wire Sites Bus Tours. Reservations are required. Enjoy a two-hour guided bus tour of DeKalb’s historically significant barbed wire sites with limited seating on a TransVAC bus.
The Patent Day Celebration commemorates when Joseph F. Glidden was granted a patent on November 24, 1874 for “The Winner,” what became one of the most-widely used types of barbed wire in the nation. It all began on the Glidden farm, “a mile west of the City of DeKalb” at the time. Joseph began searching for a better fencing method after his wife, Lucinda, complained about livestock getting into the yard.
Bring the kids to this local historical event because as the Glidden Homestead’s website says, “Glidden Homestead is an emerging living-history museum where the hard work, innovative thought, foresight, and generosity of those who brought us into the twenty-first century encourage those same qualities in the innovators and developers of tomorrow.”
The cost of the bus tour is $15 ($12 for Glidden Homestead members), and includes admission to the Homestead and barn from noon-4 p.m. To make reservations, call 815-756-7904; or email info@gliddenhomestead.org. Indicate tour time preference, name, number of people in party, and phone number. Payment by check or credit card confirms your reservation. Mail to Glidden Homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Hwy., DeKalb. Credit card orders can be placed by phone. Seats fill fast so make your reservations now!
