Continuing with the “Year of the Barn” theme, the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center will host a pinning/pegging demonstration at 1 p.m. along with a display of antique tools from noon to 4 p.m. this Sunday, July 13th, 2014, at the homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Highway.
Along with the special events, the homestead will be open for tours and blacksmiths will be demonstrating their trade in the Phineas Vaughan Blacksmith Shop.
Kirkland area resident Denny Rehn will display a variety of barn construction tools like post and beam drills, axes and what he calls a few oddball tools that visitors may not recognize.
At 1 p.m., Genoa resident Roger Watson will demonstrate pinning or pegging, a construction method used to join pieces of wood. Although the Glidden Homestead barn is one of the few brick barns still standing, pinning was used widely in wooden barn construction. Rehn’s tools will be on display through Sunday, July 27th when an added attraction will be a 1 p.m. video presentation, “The Beauty of Barns,” presented by Carol Rowe.
The historic 1860s Glidden home will be open for tours as well this Sunday. Admission is $4 per adult, and free for children younger than 14 and Glidden Homestead members.
