Four days of fun! Rides, food, contests, games and more! The 75th Annual Genoa Days begins this Wednesday and goes through the weekend.
This year marks Genoa’s 175th anniversary and the 75th anniversary of Genoa Days. In honor of those two occasions, the Genoa-Kingston Fire Department, sponsor of Genoa Days, is bringing back the tradition of a fireworks show. It will be held at 10pm this Friday, June 18, at Chamberlain Park. The rain date is Saturday, June 19. Proceeds from Genoa Days help to purchase equipment for the fire department.
Genoa Days begins at 8pm Wednesday, June 16, with the 51st annual Genoa king and queen contest, sponsored by the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce. The 2010 Genoa king and queen will lead the Genoa Days parade in a horse-drawn carriage at 1pm on Saturday, June 19th.
Genoa Days will feature rides by Skinners Amusement and bingo sponsored by the Genoa Lions Club. The kids’ wristband night is on Thursday from 6 to 10pm. There also will be a kids’ wristband afternoon on Saturday from 2 to 5:30pm.
A beer garden will be set up on North Genoa Street next to the old city hall from 5 to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Bands that will perform at the beer garden include Mojo Shriver and Soda on Friday and Back Country Roads and Red Woody on Saturday. Bands that will perform on stage in the downtown area include Shuvlhed from 7 to 10pm on Thursday and P.O.W. from 6 to 9pm on Saturday.
A fish fry and beer garden will be held at Karlsbad Tavern, 413 W. Main St., from 11am to 11pm on Friday. Karlsbad also will have a beer garden from 3 to 11pm on Saturday. Bands that will perform at Karlsbad include Funky Love, Menagerie and Recycled.
The annual 5K Brett’s Run is slated for 8:30am on Saturday at the Genoa-Kingston High School. The run is named after Brett Kubasiak, a 5-year-old Genoa boy who was hit by a car in 1997 and died a week later. Brett’s sister, Lauren, created the race in her brother’s memory.
A 4H children’s pet show will be on stage in the downtown area from 10 to 11am on Saturday. Any child with a pet may enter. Prizes will be awarded. The traditional fire department water fights will take place at 4:30pm on Saturday at the east end of the carnival. For more information, call the G-K fire department at (815) 784-3412.
