The clothes dryer uses the most energy in the household second to the refrigerator. And the refrigerator is always running though the clothes dryer is not. If you have the option to choose a gas dryer or an electrical dryer, which should you choose?
Both gas and electrically powered dryers work exactly the same. Neither one offers greater clothes drying performance. Choosing a gas or electric dryer comes down to energy efficiency and construction costs.
Gas dryers are more energy efficient then electric dryers. So why doesn’t everyone use gas dryers? Not everyone has gas service and it can be quite expensive to bring gas service to a home or building. Even if your home has gas for the stove, you might not have a convenient line running to the washing area. Running a new gas line costs money and you could face tearing up walls depending on where your washing machine and dryer are located.
Electric dryers require a 240 V outlet compared to the 120 v outlet typically found in American homes. If your home is not already set up for an electric dryer, you will need an electrician to install an 240 V outlet.
Overall, when people have the choice, they typically opt for a gas dryer. But it is often not worth the additional construction to convert from an electric to a gas dryer.
