The DeKalb Area Women’s Center (DAWC) is hosting a movie night at their Center this Friday evening starting at 7pm and will be providing the popcorn. This event is free to attend. The movie will be “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is a 2002 American comedy-drama film starring Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd, directed and written by Callie Khouri.
The DAWC was formed in November, 1993 when a group of local women came together with the desire to create a community supportive of women’s culture. The Board of Directors formulated a philosophy, mission and goals; then incorporated as an all-volunteer, non-profit educational and cultural organization housed in the former Finnish Temperance Society Hall.
The mission of the DAWC is to create a safe, supportive environment which celebrates women, promotes women’s culture, and encourages the empowerment of women, while working toward the elimination of sexism and other forms of oppression. The goal of the Center is to build a healthy and harmonious community reaching out with educational, arts, and cultural programming. In keeping with its mission, the Center has provided support groups, instructional seminars and workshops, sponsored crafts fairs, hosted dances, held concerts, offered poetry readings, Friday night coffeehouses, and screened films. Beginning in 1994, the gallery program installed solo and group art exhibits featuring mainly women artists on a monthly basis. For more information you can stop by the DAWC at 1021 State Street or call 815-758-1351.
