James J. Alfini, former dean of the NIU College of Law, will present the 23rd annual Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism at 4 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the Francis X. Riley Courtroom of Swen Parson Hall.
Alfini’s presentation is titled “Judicial Ethics and Professionalism in the 21st Century.”
This presentation discusses the professionalism of the judiciary; taking stock of where we are and where we are headed in the early years of the 21st century. It focuses on challenges faced by an elected judiciary, particularly the challenges presented by cyberspace, which have presented us with a whole new world of issues and analyzes the ethical framework available to guide the behavior of judges, particularly in the form of the code of judicial conduct.
The lecture will be followed by the 21st annual Public Interest Law Society Auction in the Thurgood Marshall Gallery beginning at 5 p.m. The PILS auction is a student-run event that raises money for outreach assistantships that will be awarded to innovative, enthusiastic and dedicated students at the NIU College of Law who work in unpaid public interest legal positions.
The event begins with a silent auction and then hotly contested items move to a live auction. Guests can also enjoy free drinks and hors d’oeuvres. All are welcome to attend.
