Whether you’re an avid golfer or participating in your first outing at the Sycamore Park District Golf Club you will have a unique opportunity to “Beat the Pro.” Kirk Lundbeck, Superintendent of Golf Operations and PGA Head Professional, has offered this fundraising challenge to outing participants for nineteen years and has raised $132,287! One hundred percent of these proceeds to go local organizations and charities including the Pay it Forward House, Voluntary Action Center’s Meals on Wheels, DeKalb County Hospice, Kishwaukee United Way, Sycamore Music Boosters, Sycamore Sports Boosters, Fraternal Order of Police Scholarship, Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, and many more. During the 2015 outing season, Beat the Pro raised over $6,000!
Aside from helping a wide variety great causes throughout the area, Lundbeck enjoys the opportunity to meet everyone who is playing the course that day – whether they choose to place a bet or not. Lundbeck says, “I like to see people having fun with it. It’s a fun, quick game that ads to the enjoyment of their experience and helps a good cause.” He adds that golfers will approach him months or years later to reminisce about their shot at Beat the Pro.
Beat the Pro can be incorporated into any outing, adding to the already fun atmosphere of the event. If a golf outing organizer chooses, they may have Lundbeck stationed at a tee for the day. When foursomes reach that tee, each player may place a minimum $5 bet that they can get a closer shot than Lundbeck. All proceeds are donated to a designated charity or to the fundraiser for which the outing was arranged. Golfers must place a bet before they tee off. There are opportunities for participants to double or triple their money and they even get to choose if they or Lundbeck goes first. Lundbeck adds that when a golfer does “Beat the Pro,” it’s likely that they will end up contributing their bet anyway.
Whether outings are for the purpose of fundraising or a family or company event, this service is always offered at no cost and the outing organizer gets to choose which charity the proceeds are donated to. Beat the Pro is only one example of the many services provided to outing organizers that help make their event a memorable one. Golf Outings at the Sycamore Park District Golf Club are a social and recreational asset to the community – especially when they give back!
