Fall drives aren’t just about the scenery – they’re about the season itself, the one where “cuffing season” takes hold and couples start seeking cozy, cinematic escapes. There is a crispness in the air that encourages blankets, warm drinks, and lingering conversations with the windows cracked open. Unlike summer, when drives are about energy and speed, fall slows everything down – inviting couples to savor the stillness, the shifting light, and the fleeting beauty of the season together.
Gunther Volkswagen Coconut Creek carried out a survey of 3,005 couples to gauge their opinions, based on past experiences, of the most romantic fall drives in Illinois.
The top 3 were as follows:
#1. Route 66
The “Mother Road” begins in Chicago and winds southwest through small towns and farmland that glow with autumn color. Vintage diners, neon signs, and roadside attractions add nostalgia to a journey framed by maples, oaks, and hickories ablaze in crimson and gold. Route 66 in Illinois is more than a drive; it’s a walk through American memory, bathed in the soft light and colors of fall.
#2. Great River Road
The Great River Road traces the Mississippi with sweeping views of bluffs, floodplains, and river towns rich in history. In fall, crimson and gold forests reflect in the deep blue water, turning each bend into a painting. Couples can explore charming main streets, share antique-hunting adventures, or simply sit by the river, letting the scenery set the mood.
#3. Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive:
This Midwestern route passes through small towns, farms, and rolling hills that glow with amber, scarlet, and gold each fall. Local art, crafts, and community festivals give couples a chance to connect with Illinois’ heritage along the way. It’s more than just a foliage drive—it’s a celebration of Midwest warmth and tradition.
