Organization sets out to rebuild former Matthew Boones kitchen
Through a partnership with The Church in DeKalb, Feed’em Soup Community Project has begun a process to bring the Kitchen at 122 South First Street in DeKalb to good working order. The Church in DeKalb has recently acquired the lease for the space which includes a 1,500 square foot kitchen space left largely in disrepair. While The Church has little use for a kitchen of those massive proportions, Feed’em Soup – currently serving at the First Lutheran Church of DeKalb – is quickly outgrowing the kitchen space at their current location. This new space when brought to good working order will allow the organization to continue to grow and feed more people here in DeKalb County. The organization currently feeds over 150 people on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Attendance has nearly tripled since the groups first meal in September. Feed’em Soup is also currently looking for ways to make their meals weekly to supply the growing demand.
In order to bring the kitchen up to code, Feed’em Soup is looking to the community for donations of time and/or materials from licensed plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. In addition, the group is also seeking ways to either raise funds or solicit donations for stoves, freezers, refrigerators and other kitchen supplies from pots and pans to forks and knives.
“This is a massive undertaking for us…” Derek Gibbs, Vice President for Feed’em Soup says. “…the building has massive potential for our organization to provide an even greater service to our community, but we won’t be able to pull it off without the support of our community.” The group has until June 1st 2011 to determine if they will be able to bring the kitchen up to code.
Anyone wishing to make monetary donations may do so on www.FeedEmSoup.org and donations of time or supplies can be arranged by contacting the group at Info@FeedEmSoup.org or by calling 815.981.9285
