Earlier this year local nonprofit Feed’em Soup Community Project was awarded a brand new 2012 Toyota Sienna through the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program. The organization competed against 500 other non profits across the nation to win 1 of 100 new Toyota vehicles to assist with its mission. The group received the vehicle in October of last year and has used it to haul food and supplies with a very limited shuttle service thus far but will be making the shuttle available to the public beginning this week.
The group currently opens its doors at 122 S. 1st St. in DeKalb from 4:30pm to 7pm on the 2nd 4th and 5th Wednesday of each month. The heart of the organization is a warm home cooked meal served from 5pm to 7pm. In addition, a food pantry, clothing closet and Childrens program featuring stories, arts and crafts are also held during meal hours and is open to the public free of charge.
The shuttle service will be provided free of charge to residents of Sycamore, DeKalb and Cortland on a first come first served basis. Those who lack transportation of their own are encouraged to contact the organization at their new shuttle hotline at 815 293 RIDE (7433) for a one time pickup or to be put on a regular schedule.
Founding Feed’em Soup volunteer Josh Akers of DeKalb will be the transportation coordinator and responsible for running the shuttle on meal days and coordinating a permanent schedule with those in need of transportation.
