February is American Heart Month and staff at DeKalb County Health Department (DCHD) encourage the community to reduce their risk of heart disease by taking action. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That’s approximately one woman every minute!
To reduce the risk of heart disease:
- Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
- Exercise regularly
- Quit smoking
- Limit alcohol use
- Know your numbers including blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
DCHD staff will participate in activities throughout the month to inspire colleagues and clients to make healthier choices. Employees will launch National American Heart month by wearing red on Go Red for Women Day on Friday, February 3 rd . Be sure to like the DeKalb County Health Department’s social media sites to get ideas from staff to help reduce your risk of heart disease. DCHD also encourages the community to also wear Red in support of National Go Red for Women Day!
