The DeKalb County Community Gardens received a grant from the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture. The check was presented to Dan Kenney, Executive Director of DCCG, Gene Heinsohn, owner of the Walnut Grove Farm, and Scottie Heinsohn. The check was presented by Allan Aves, member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.
The funds from the grant will be used to continue the establishment of the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm, located north of Kirkland. The farm will provide agriculturally based training and experiences for individuals with special needs of all kinds.
DeKalb County Community Gardens is in their fourth growing season. The organization has over 50 locations all around the county, and have provided over 36,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for people in need through the local food pantries, meal sites, and other locations.
The Walnut Grove Vocational Farm is a part of the DeKalb County Community Gardens, Garden Paths of Hope Program. The Walnut Grove Farm project provides agriculturally based training, experiences, and employment for people with special needs of all kinds in an integrated supportive setting. The farm will provide additional opportunities for those with special needs when they leave the public school transitional programs. The farm training opportunities and experiences will provide the participants with special needs the ability to start their own small businesses, or to be employed meaningfully in the community.
