The DeKalb Park District staff have put their heads together to conjure some frightening fun to be enjoyed by all ages this Halloween season! Five Halloween-themed programs are planned this fall, two of which are brand new in 2021.
On Saturday, October 9th, staff is hosting a ghastly golf outing, the Spooktacular Scramble at River Heights Golf Course, located at 1020 Sharon Drive. Participants will enjoy 18 haunted holes of golf, plus some special course contests, and a putting challenge. Prizes will be awarded for first place and to both the individual and foursome with the Best Individual or Team Costume. The fee is $60 per individual and $200 per foursome, with check-in at 10:00 am and a shotgun start at 11:00 am. Pre-registration is required by October 6. The fee includes a golf cart, while supplies last.
NEW! Spooky has arrived at Huntley Middle School Pool, located at 1515 South 4th Street. Join us for our first annual Monster Mash Splash on October 16th! At 2:00 pm, we will have several Halloween-themed activities both in and out of the water. The fee is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents.
Calling all witches and warlocks, ghouls, and ghosts! Tuesday, October 19th is the deadline to participate in the second annual DeKalb Halloween House Decorating Contest. DeKalb residents are invited to show off their spookiest house decorations and enter this fun contest! Prizes will be awarded in two categories: Best Overall (staff pick) and People’s Choice. Addresses of all entries will be published in local media unless specified otherwise at the time of registration. Staff judging will take place between 4:00-9:00 pm on October 20, with the People’s Choice voting taking place on the District Facebook page, October 21-28. Photos of each house will be shared, and the image with the most “likes” by 9:00 pm on October 28 wins! Winners will receive a prize package and a sign to display in their yard. The fee to participate is $5 per household. This contest is sponsored by Raising Cane’s DeKalb.
Our four-legged friends get to enjoy some Halloween fun too! Staff will be hosting a free pet event, Howl-o-ween, for all our furry family members on Saturday, October 23rd at the Katz Dog Park, located at 393 W. Dresser Road. This costume contest for dogs and their owners has been an annual favorite and staff cannot wait to see all the creativity. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Most Spook-tacular, Howling with Laughter, and Best Owner/Pet Costume Combo. Judging will begin at 11:00 am and this is a free event sponsored by Raising Canes DeKalb, T-Mobile, and MetroNet.
NEW! Bring your carved pumpkin to Hopkins Sled Hill, located at 1403 Sycamore Road, on Saturday, November 6th at 1:00 pm for a pumpkin roll competition! Have fun smashing your pumpkin and turning it into compost that will help nourish plants in the spring. Each participant must be registered, spectators are welcome. This event is weather-dependent and may be subject to cancellation. Staff asks participants to remove any candles and glow sticks beforehand. Non-carved pumpkins will not be accepted. The fee is $5 per participant. Sponsored by T-Mobile and MetroNet.
