To celebrate and acknowledge Juneteenth the local DeKalb chapter of Black Lives Matter has planned a march and rally on Friday, June 19th. The march is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM from Clinton-Rosette Middle School (650 North First Street) and will end at Hopkins Park (Illinois State Route 23).
Juneteenth was created on June 19, 1865, as Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger informed a reluctant community in Galveston, Texas, that President Abraham Lincoln had freed enslaved people in rebel states two and a half years earlier. He pressed locals to comply with the directive.
Juneteenth is often celebrated with local communities and family gatherings, but many events this year will be celebrated virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic and the Illinois Governors mandate for limited gatherings.
The DeKalb march will create traffic problems and police encourage drivers to avoid this area during the event.
