Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events in more than 193 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.
DeKalb County knows how to jump on-board! Below are a few events that we’ve found in the area if you’d like to get involved too!
Kishwaukee Kiwanis DeKalb/Sycamore Trail and County Farm Woods Clean-up – Kishwaukee Kiwanis Celebrate Earth Week on Saturday, April 22nd from 8:00am to 10am by cleaning up the DeKalb/Sycamore Trail and County Farm Woods. All are invited. Meet along the trail behind the Movie Theaters by WalMart in DeKalb.
The Great Western Trail Clean-up – Meet at Great Western Trail (west end) at Rt. 64 and Airport Rd. (just east of Doty Concrete Products), 1 mile east of Sycamore on Saturday, April 22nd from 8:00am until 10:00am. Wear long sleeves and bring gloves!
Tree Planting at Afton Forest Preserve – On Saturday, April 22nd, from 9am-noon at Afton Forest Preserve, 13600 Crego Rd. in DeKalb, 1 1/2 miles south of Perry Rd. Meet in the middle parking lot and wear waterproof boots, work clothes and gloves. All ages welcome to volunteer!
Prairie Park: Spring Clean-Up – Also on Saturday, April 22nd, starting at 9:00am, the DeKalb Park District is hosting a Community Clean-Up Day at Prairie Park. Participants will meet at the Disc Golf Course (corner of Glidden and Clifford) and tackle some park clean up projects from 9:00-11:00 a.m.
STEM Divas – Saving the World – In honor of Earth Day, this very special STEM Divas class on Saturday starting at 9am, is all about how you can help save the world. Students will explore easy and fun ways that they can help take care of the Earth at home. They’ll design and build their own windmills, make working water filters, and even learn about composting and recycling. For anyone who has ever wanted to help save the world, this is the class for you! This class will only meet once at the NIU STEM Classroom at Swen Parson Hall 146, from 9am-1pm Saturday.
