The sounds of brass and beating of the drums returns to DeKalb and NIU Huskie Stadium as the 2018 Drum Corps Tour of Champions promises to bring excitement and pageantry with its returns to the campus of Northern Illinois University. Local concert promoter and Special Event coordinator Michael Embrey will again be the regional host for this special tourism event. “We are very happy to have this special concert show return to our area and even more excited that the show will be on Saturday evening, July 14”, says Embrey, a long time Drum Corps promoter. Embrey feels that with the show on Saturday evening there could be up to 7,000 visitors to the DeKalb area.
“This event brings thousands of tourism dollars to the DeKalb area”, says Debbie Armstrong, Executive Director for the DeKalb CVB. “This show is held on a Saturday evening and will attract many new people to the area, a great summer time event”.
The list of Championship type Drums Corps include; The Cavaliers from Rosemont, IL,
Phantom Regiment from Rockford, IL, Blue Devils from Concord, CA, Colts from Dubuque, IA, Crossmen from San Antonio, TX, The Pioneers from Milwaukee, WI, Blue Stars from La Crosse, WI, and The Madison Scouts from Madison, WI.
Brad Hoey from NIU feels this type of event also helps to promote the university in a positive way as well as providing a great venue for this event. The Drum Corps show helps university staff get ready for the annual High School ISHA football playoffs held at Huskie Stadium.
Jeff Dobie, CEO of Fatty’s Pub, says this is the busiest weekend during the summer for all local DeKalb restaurants. Last year many alumni Drum Corps members hosted parties prior to the show at several of the restaurants.
