The DeKalb Park District has announced the hiring of Steve Moore as the District’s new Superintendent of Golf. Moore joined the DeKalb Park District and began his new duties on February 6, 2020. He has been active in the game of golf and became a PGA professional in 1996. Moore brings strong management skills to the District’s golf operations, with over 20 years of experience in the golf industry. Moore feels his background and skills in programming, teaching, marketing, and budgeting will help accelerate the DeKalb Park District golf program.
Moore’s experience in golf course management from golf courses in Beloit, Rockford, and Aurora will help him recapture the interest in golf in the DeKalb area. Local Park District golf courses in DeKalb will start seeing some new and exciting improvements at the golf courses under Moore’s leadership this season.
From a telephone interview with Park District Executive Director Amy Doll and DeKalb County Online, Doll commented “from the final interview the Park Board and Staff knew Moore would be a positive change for the golf program. Steve’s passion for the game of golf, high standards for his staff, and vast experience in golf operations are invaluable assets that he brings to the DeKalb Park District” said Amy Doll. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and his excitement to the golf courses here in DeKalb and I am confident that he will do great things at River Heights and Buena Vista Golf Courses”.
This past winter a group of local business owners and golfers formed a committee to help save the River Heights Golf Course due to the cost of keeping it open. One of the committee members Micah Stoddard feels there is a lot to be done to get the Club House and course back to its glory days. “I am happy that the Park District found a pro golfer to help direct the program, but there is a lot of work to be done from everyone (Park District, Superintendent of Golf, and community)” commented Stoddard. Micah Stoddard is a local State Farm Insurance Agent.
The number of golf courses and traditional golfers has declined over the past decade. The one bright spot is that the number of social golfers has increased at venues like indoor golf simulators, driving ranges and destinations like ‘Top Golf’. “We have seen the number of people that enjoy the social side of golfing and having a year-round venue to experience golf continues to grow,” said Tara Hippensteel, National Sales Manager of Top Golf. Top Golf is one of the fastest-growing golf experience venues in the country (North America and international locations).
DeKalb ELKS Lodge 765 has a quarterly social evening outing to the Top Golf in Naperville (there is also a new Top Golf in Schaumburg). Local DeKalb businessman Jim Mason will be opening a new indoor golf experience on Sycamore Road in DeKalb.
The community is invited to meet Steve Moore at an open house on Wednesday, February 12th at 6:30 pm at the River Heights Clubhouse. Everyone is welcome to this special meet and greet event.
