At Hopkins Park for the 4th of July
A bit of history about The DeKalb Municipal Band is a tradition that goes back to 1854, when a small group of musicians fresh from the California Gold Rush formed the Silver Cornet Band. Since then, a City Band in DeKalb has existed for over 160 years, uninterrupted by wars, and a depression. With such a record, DeKalb claims to be the city with the oldest continuous band in Illinois.
Bring chairs, blankets, games, and appetites for an afternoon and evening with family and friends. Kick off the day with our Independence 5K, then cool down with swimming at Hopkins Pool. Food trucks and booths from many favorite local caterers, grills, and vendors will be on site in the early afternoon hours. Big Mic’s DJ Service and Karaoke will be in the Bandshell in the afternoon followed by The DeKalb Municipal Band, who will perform prior to and during the fireworks.
Fireworks at dusk are co-sponsored by the DeKalb Park District and City of DeKalb.
