The new DeKalb Park District sled hill is ready for snow and the people to start sledding. It seems as though the winter weather is here and just in time for the DeKalb Park District to open the new sled hill in Hopkins Park. A grand opening and ribbon cutting were held this past Saturday morning. To commemorate the occasion, representatives from the community joined the DeKalb Park District staff and Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District trustees were on hand to cut the ribbon for the sled hill.
Building the sled hill in Hopkins Park was a cost-saving project of the Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District. The 52 million dollar expansion of the former sanitation department would have required the displacement of tons of dirt. This project would minimize the distance that the dirt would need to be hauled. A temporary construction road was built to connect the KWRD construction site to the sled hill site, without requiring that the trucks travel onto any city streets or the state highway, that would have been required as the dirt needed to be hauled off-site.
The opening day preview included the ribbon-cutting, as well as special activities including pumpkin bowling, cardboard sledding, hayrides, and marshmallow roasting.
