The DeKalb Public Works Department will begin the annual leaf collection program on Monday, October 29, 2018. Residents should rake leaves into a narrow row parallel to the backside of the curb on the parkway, not in the street. Leaf piles must be free of sticks, rocks, or other debris. City crews will then vacuum raked leaves from the parkways.
Crews work through sections by collecting one side of several streets and then return to collect the other side. Leaves blocked by parked cars will not be collected and crews will not return until the following cycle. Please use off street parking during this time.
Scheduling sections is difficult due to weather and leaf fall. Crews will begin on the south perimeters of the City limits and collect leaves working north. We anticipate completing four complete cycles throughout the City with a final week of spot collections the week of November 26.
No collections will be made after November 30.
Residents are encouraged to utilize Lakeshore Recycling Services curbside collection of yard waste on their normal refuse collection day. LRS will collect yard waste through November 30. Place leaves in landscape waste bags or open garbage cans marked with “YW” or “X” not exceeding 32 gallons or 50 pounds.
Consider mulching your leaves. Mulching reduces leaves to one tenth of their original size and the mulched leaves will act as a natural fertilizer and weed control agent.
