This Saturday August 26th, from 10-4pm, DeKalb County Community Gardens will be holding a very special fall open house highlighting their Walnut Grove Vocational Farm located at 33600 Pearl in Kirkland. New this year is a special event from 12-2pm on the farm. This year in addition to the tomato and garlic tasting, there will be a guest Chef. There will also be beautiful mums, fountain grass, and flowering kale plants for sale.
Chef Rudy Galindo will be creating delicious small plate pairings to go with beers provided by The Forge Brewery. This event will also have live music provided by local music artist Bob Palmer. Tickets for this event are $15 if purchased on-line before the event here.
The Walnut Grove Vocational is a program of DCCG that provides individuals with special needs training in horticulture and agriculture. The program works with all of the transition programs of DeKalb County high schools. In addition to working with students in the transition programs the Walnut Grove Farm provides individuals who have graduated from the transition programs individualized custom training programs to help them find employment in the community.
“This is an exciting time for the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm and an excellent opportunity for the public to come out and see the farm and learn about how we are working with those with special needs.” said Dan Kenney, Executive Director of DeKalb County Community Gardens. “ There will be a tomato and garlic tasting, the delicious pairings of Chef Rudy and The Forge, music by Bob Palmer, tours of our 10 acre Oak Savanah Prairie Restoration Project, mums and other fall plants for sale, and u-pick vegetable opportunity. The weather is going to be great, so it should be a great day in the Country.”
Walnut Grove Vocational Farm has spring and fall plants for wholesale and retail sale. The farm also produces vegetables for u-pick, the Box of Hope Program of DCCG, and for the Genoa and Kirkland food pantries.
