Tour 9 of the DeKalb County Community Gardens 37 community garden sites will be this Saturday, September 21st, 2013, starting at The Mayor’s Garden behind City Hall in DeKalb. Here you may purchase a ticket for $10 and receive a map of the gardens open on Saturday. At each site there will be volunteers to answer questions, and at some sites there will be refreshments or an activity. The gardens range in size and type. The event will take place rain or shine so bring an umbrella or a sun hat, depending on the weather. There is a raffle for a 5 x 10 foot garden bed built in your own backyard as well as a basket of fresh vegetables. All proceeds will go toward seeds and supplies for the 2014 gardens so plan to come out and support the DeKalb County Community Gardens this Saturday!
This Sunday, September 22nd, plan to attend the Local Flavors Dinner at Tapa La Luna, sponsored by the DeKalb County Community Gardens. This gourmet dinner made from local farm and community garden produce celebrates the 2013 season and will help fund the 2014 Community Gardens season to come. Tickets are $45 from DCCG members or call Tapa La Luna at 815.217.0990.
The DeKalb County Community Gardens now span over 10 acres, over 200 raised beds, producing hundreds of pounds of fresh wholesome food for DeKalb County food pantries, and now also providing vegetables to senior citizens at Colonial House and Heritage Woods, as well as the Voluntary Action Center Meals on Wheels and meal sites.
