Since its inception in 1981, the DeKalb Corn Classic 10 km Race event has grown to include a 3 km Run/Walk and a Diaper Derby/Toddler Trot. The addition of these two events has made the DeKalb Corn Fest Races a true “family affair” in which three generations comfortably participate. The planning and implementation of this fitness-oriented event occurs through the dedicated efforts of a volunteer committee. The 32nd Annual DeKalb Corn Classic will be held this Saturday, August 24th, 2013 at Huntley Middle School, 1515 S. 4th St.. The 3K Walk/Run starts at 7:55am and the 10K Race begins at 8am.
The 3 km Walk/Run is a family oriented event. Three generations are seen participating in this out and back course through the local neighborhoods. Parents pushing babies in strollers, the family dog in tow, children on roller blades, tricycles and bicycles, and elderly couples strolling arm in arm have all comprised the field for this event. Since this is a “fun” event, official times are not published, but times are displayed on the race clock for participants to view as they cross the finish line.
The Diaper Derby and Toddler Trot remains a sight to be seen. The gymnasium is packed with infants, toddlers, “coaches” and their families. It still is not evident as to who is more entertaining, the “coaches” or the babies. “Coaches” attempt to use anything at their disposal to encourage the baby to crawl or walk/run across the mat (baby bottles, stuffed animals, dangling key rings, funny faces, a variety of body gestures, etc.). The gymnasium is filled with the sounds of laughter, cheers, squeals of excitement and lots of smiles from the little ones. One thing is for sure, the “coaches” get more of a workout from this event than the babies do!
In an effort to keep the 100+ volunteers coming back year after year, special 5, 10, 15, and 20-year recognition awards were initiated for the “super” volunteers. In 2002 the 10 km race course was modified, making it a more appealing course for runners, and was once again certified as a sanctioned event with the USATF Illinois. The $1,000 worth of prize money for the 10 km race attracts elite runners from the area. The race is currently listed on the racing circuits of the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA), Starved Rock Runners LTD., Fox River Trail Runners, and the Northern Illinois Trail Runners; clubs that award points to their members for participation and/or winning.
