The DeKalb City Council has approved plans to construct a roundabout at the intersection of North First Street and Sycamore Road. This initiative aims to enhance traffic flow and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
Project Details
The intersection, located just south of Clinton Rosette Middle School and across from the Ellwood House, has been identified as a troublesome area due to its current configuration. The reconfiguration will feature a roundabout designed to address the contested merger of northbound traffic at North First Street and Sycamore Road, which was installed several decades ago. Read more about the project here.
Funding and Timeline
The project is expected to cost approximately $420,000, with the majority of funding anticipated to come from state and federal grants. The City’s share of the engineering and construction costs is projected to be about 10%, or an estimated $42,000, drawn from the City’s Capital Projects Fund. Conceptual engineering is initially needed for submittal to the potential grant-issuing agency (IDOT) for preliminary review and approval. Learn more about the funding breakdown here.
Community Impact
City Engineer Zac Gill emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “The reconfiguration will feature a roundabout that will ‘cure’ the contested merger of northbound traffic at N. First Street and Sycamore Road, which was installed several decades ago.” See his full statement in the City Council meeting agenda.
Next Steps
The City has selected Wills, Burke, Kelsey Associates to perform design engineering services for the intersection reconstruction project. City Council approval of the engineering services agreement is recommended.
As the project progresses, residents can expect updates on construction timelines and any potential traffic adjustments. The City is committed to minimizing disruptions and ensuring a smooth transition to the new traffic pattern.
