There are 21 days left to file your 2014 tax return on time – but who’s counting?
OK, we are. And you probably should be, too. There are some pretty stiff penalties if you are required to file a tax return and don’t take any action before April 15. Leer en español.
There is good news though: If you really can’t get that return completed on time, you have the option to file an extension and get an automatic six months to submit your return. There’s just one catch – if you owe the IRS, you need to make an estimated payment in order to avoid the failure-to-file penalty.

Also, if you are in the military, or have a spouse on active duty in a combat zone, different rules may apply to you.
Finally, if you are an American citizen living abroad (an expatriate or “expat”), your filing deadline is a little different – June 15 instead of April 15. But we have details on how we can help out with that too.
Don’t fret. Three weeks are plenty of time to either complete that tax return or to get an extension. Happy filing!
