The DeKalb County Community Foundation granted a $17,128 Community Needs Grant to the Village of Kingston and Genoa Fire Department to install an emergency warning siren.
The Village of Kingston was prompted to apply for funding for this project after it received a letter in 2006 from a concerned second grade citizen, Danielle Johnson, about the safety of the community. Danielle asked the Village if they had plans for installing a tornado siren, and if not she said, “Maybe my school could help raise the money for one.”
The warning siren, used to alert members of Kingston and Kingston Township about severe weather including tornadoes, has been installed and is tested the first Tuesday of the month. Village of Kingston Treasurer Taunya Fischer noted that she has heard, “Nothing but good things from the community. People feel safer.”
