On February 27, 2013 a tragic car accident took the life of 11-year-old Matthew Ranken of Sycamore.
In his honor, Culver’s of Sycamore hosted a Day of Giving, April 2, 2013. Fifty percent of the entire day’s sales was donated to support the Ranken family during this difficult time.
At 8:30 that night Gracie Mott received the above photo in an email, of the line waiting to get into Culvers which was STILL wrapped all the way around Culver’s and down the street for the benefit. She filed a report on DeKalb County Online’s Facebook page
Within a day 20,072 people viewed the post on Facebook. More than 3,200 shared the story. And Culver’s wrote the Ranken family a check for some $9,600.
That’s the stuff that makes DeKalb County Illinois a great place to call home. Such thoughtful and caring neighbors are enjoyable and inspiring.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with you. The event was indeed inspiring. Within just a few hours of posting a pic some 20,000 people shared it. The photo is out of focus and very unspectacular so the sharing really was a tribute to Matthew. Story of the Year in our book.

This event was such a success. Our entire family would like to thank Amanda Corona and her entire team for the “Day of Giving for Matthew Ranken”. Our little Matthew was taken away from us tragically leaving a whole in our family and in our hearts. Thank You Culvers for your amazing gift.
