DeKalb County Community Gardens teamed up with students of Dr. Laura Vazquez, a Media Studies professor at Northern Illinois University to have a 90 second video made for a grant competition. Mattie Pace, a December graduate of NIU Communication Department, and Communication senior Michelle Herr, directed and produced the video about DCCG. The video is entered in the national Food Rebels Video Contest sponsored by Applegate Natural and Organic Meats Company. The video receiving the most votes will be granted a $3,000 grant, and will be eligible for consideration to be featured on the PBS television show, Food Forward (Food Forward TV is a PBS series about people transforming food in America. Watch online at www.PBS.org/foodforward.)
“This is a great opportunity for Northern Illinois University to work with a local non-profit and bring some positive attention to DeKalb County,” said Dan Kenney, Executive Director of DeKalb County Community Gardens.
The film also features Lisa Cumings, the Kish Health Systems Community Wellness liaison. The film shows many of the projects DCCG is working on throughout the County.
The DeKalb County Community Gardens has expanded to over 40 locations in just three growing seasons. The local non-profits coordinates volunteers in the growing of fresh vegetables for people in need. Over the course of the 2014 growing season, DCCG has grown over 21,000 pounds of fresh produce for county food pantries, and community meal sites. DCCG also provides educational workshops and works with over 70 partners and sponsors. DCCG through its Garden Paths of Hope Program, is also creating a regional vocational farm for individuals with special needs. The Walnut Grove Vocational Farm is also described in the video. It will be located in the northwest corner of DeKalb County, north of Kirkland.
DCCG would like members of the community to consider helping them earn the grant by following the link: http://w.heyo.com/6d2615 and watching the short film posted by Mattie Pace. Then vote for DCCG. After voting please share the link with others. A person can also vote from their phones, laptops, and any PC. The more votes the better. The contest runs until January 9th.
The money from the grant will help DeKalb County Community Gardens buy seeds, plants, and supplies for the 2015 growing season.
