See what’s growing in local farm fields. Get an up close look at corn and soybean crops. Talk to a farmer about how your food is grown. Bring the entire family for some hands-on fun activities. Local farmers invite you to “Farm to Food and You!” an event designed to connect city families to their food. The farm event is planned for Saturday, Sept. 13 northwest of Sycamore in the field located at Church and North Grove Roads.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. you will have the chance to participate in all sorts of farm activities including: learning about how corn and soybeans grow, getting on tractors and other farm equipment used to plant and harvest crops, understanding the use of modern technology in agriculture, seeing farm animals that consume the grains, and having conversations with producers about farm and food production.
“It’s an opportunity for people to visit a farm field and have conversations with the farmers who grow their food,” said Mike DeSchepper, president of the Corn & Soybean Growers. “I think people will find this event quite unique, informational and an entertaining experience.” The farm field day event is being sponsored by the DeKalb County Corn & Soybean Growers.
There will be several farm-fun activities for the kids such as shelling corn, playing with soybeans, enjoying beef and pork games, watching a sheep being sheared, milking a recirculating cow, petting farm animals, and much more. Also, special exhibits will help city families become better connected to local agriculture. All activities are free and are open to the general public. Food will be available to purchase.
Groups contributing to this event include: DeKalb County Corn & Soybean Growers, DeKalb-Kane Cattlemen’s Association, DeKalb Area Pork Producers, DeKalb County Lamb & Wool Producers, Kishwaukee Dairy Herd Improvement Association, DeKalb County Farm Bureau, and local FFA chapters.
